Mockup

A photorealistic template — usually a layered PSD — that shows how a design will look applied to a real-world object or surface, such as a business card, mug or sign.

Also called: mock-up, product mockup

A mockup is a presentation template that places flat artwork onto a realistic scene, so a client can see — and feel — how a design works in context rather than as a logo floating on a white artboard. Most professional mockups ship as layered Photoshop (PSD) files where the artwork drops into a smart object, and a displacement map bends it to follow the surface.

Quality varies widely. Lighting plausibility, shadow accuracy, smart-object reliability and licence clarity are the things TheLayer scores when it reviews a mockup, against a published methodology.
